Hi, I’m Martin

I love to write and figure things out. I’m curious about all subjects, so you’ll definitely find something that interests you here. You can see books, articles, and past issues of my newsletter below.

A Guide for Ambitious People

A Guide for Ambitious People is a revolutionary tool for self-examination and self-transformation. There are lots of books on how to achieve success, but there’s one reason why they’re all ineffective: They’re incomplete. You can’t touch on just one, or even a random three or four, of the qualities necessary for attaining success. You instead have to cover all of the aspects of personal efficacy.

Vidal’s masterwork uses the different factors that play into our decision-making process—willpower, awareness, and emotions—to create a map of the psyche and uncover each and every one of the self-defeating portions of our personalities within. Whether we’re failing because of procrastination, impulsivity, a lack of self-awareness, or any other deficit within our mental system, this book holds the key to overcoming it.

Flower Garden

Flower Garden is an exploration of the human soul. It discusses love, narcissism, grief, anger, and all of the other things that makeup our essence as people. Written in a series of short passages, each only requiring a few minutes to pore over, the reader moves through the pages as if sauntering through a garden—as if stopping briefly to take in the tulips before continuing on to the orchids.

The passage “On Flirtation” discusses humanity’s reliance on flirtation as a concealment for hypocrisy; “Death Is a Trifle” argues that, as something beyond our awareness, death is completely insignificant; “The Illusion of Bravery” explains that there is no measure for true bravery because there is no way to know how much fear one person is experiencing over another; and in “Anger Makes You Feel Powerful,” Vidal discusses how people let their fear transform into anger in order to feel powerful again. These are four examples of the seventy-seven “flowers” in Vidal’s garden. Come take a life-changing stroll through Flower Garden.

On Authorship

On Authorship is a compilation of fourteen timeless articles on writing. Originally published online, they were among the most popular articles in Vidal’s extensive repertoire. The essays primarily focus on the practical and emotional challenges faced by writers as they move from writing as a hobby to writing as a career. With an approach that is incisive, personal, and reassuring, the work delves into the topics of self-worth, motivation, fear, and more, and is as much an exploration of the soul as it is a discussion and celebration of the craft of writing.

Vidal elevates the act of writing to a spiritual exercise, and the writer to an individual different in kind. He balances an inviolable respect for the art itself with an empowering principle of self-acceptance. His writing flows with a rhythm that is as smooth as silk, and the substance never shies away from the true breadth of a writer’s experiences. Anyone who has a deep appreciation for writing, whether it be as a hobby or as a profession, will find themselves stunned by the beauty and wisdom of Vidal’s On Authorship.
